Are you ready to take the big step and start selling on Amazon, where millions of potential customers can access your products? Follow this basic guide to take your first steps into the giant of online selling.
How much are you going to sell per month? Choose your seller plan
First, you should have an idea of your selling capacity and the popularity of your product or brand. Amazon offers two plans for sellers: Individual and Professional.
With the Individual plan, you’ll pay a €0.99 commission for each product sold.
With the Professional plan, you pay a flat fee of €39, regardless of whether you sell more or less. Additionally, it’s the only plan that allows you to advertise your products within the marketplace and sell in restricted categories (alcoholic beverages, medications, erotic products, tobacco, etc.).
We recommend that unless you know you have a super popular product or brand or want to start with paid campaigns from the get-go, start with the Individual plan until you can sell at least 40 products per month.
Register on Amazon as a seller
It’s time to create your seller account on Amazon through the Seller Central platform.
To do this, you will need a corporate email account (i.e., @yourcompanydomain, for example, sell@yourcompany.com), a personal or business credit card, a valid identification document (ID card or passport), and if it’s for your company, the registration details as well as tax certificates. Lastly, a valid phone number and your bank account details.
It’s important to know that you don’t need to be a limited company to register as a seller. You can also do it under your name if you haven’t yet created your company. Whether you’re an individual or a company, you can sell on Amazon.
Start uploading your products
You can upload your products manually or through an importer that Amazon provides to sellers so they can import an Excel file with all their references.
The importer is recommended if you have more than 10 references or variable products (for example, different sizes or colors of T-shirts). To use the importer, you’ll first need to choose the most suitable category for your products, as the fields to fill in will vary depending on the category.
Once you’ve chosen the category, Amazon will provide you with a downloadable Excel template to fill in and all the instructions. It’s quite easy because you’ll have pre-filled examples and the information to complete is quite specific. Additionally, when uploading the file, if you have any errors, Amazon will indicate what the error is and in which field it’s located. You might not get it right the first time, but you won’t take long to correct the errors.
The minimum fields required by Amazon to list your product are
- Product ID
- SKU
- Product Title
- Product Description
- Product Images
- Price
Additionally, you’ll need to have the EAN code for each product on hand, whether you are the manufacturer or not.
Choose how you’re going to manage the shipping of your products
To send your products to your buyers, you can either do it “personally” or use Amazon’s logistics.
Amazon’s logistics involves sending your inventory to Amazon’s fulfillment centers so they can take care of shipping, customer service, and everything related to reverse logistics. With Amazon’s logistics, you’ll have more options to obtain the Amazon Prime badge, which will boost your sales and allow you to offer one-day shipping.
Alternatively, you can choose to manage your logistics and inventory. This option is ideal if you want to:
- Keep all your inventory on hand.
- Use your packaging.
- Have a higher profit margin for each sale.
