What is SEO and what does it consist of?
SEO gets its name from the acronym in English for Search Engine Optimization. SEO positioning consists of the actions taken to improve a website’s performance and achieve a position among the top organic (unpaid) search results on search engines, thus gaining greater presence and traffic.
SEO strategies are carried out organically and naturally, meaning that spaces on search engines are not purchased to obtain a greater presence. Instead, it is earned by creating valuable, relevant, and quality content. It is the cheapest option considering its long-term benefits. However, it requires a lot of dedication and time to maintain proper page optimization since it is not a task that is done once or sporadically but requires certain monitoring and updating.
What is SEM and what does it consist of?
SEM refers to Search Engine Marketing, or more commonly known in Spanish as Search Marketing. It has the same ultimate goal as SEO, which is to achieve greater visibility for the website, but in an inorganic way, meaning through payments to major search engines so that our website appears among the top positions in exchange for monetary compensation.
The corresponding payment is made through different ads integrated into advertising campaigns implemented in search engines. The amount is calculated based on the number of clicks a user makes on our website thanks to being in the top positions through SEM. Therefore, the more clicks achieved, the higher the cost to invest in search engines. SEM strategies are mainly used to position the domain in the medium and long term since in the short term it requires a considerable capital investment, and the results are not immediate.
What is the best option between SEO and SEM?
Once you know what both SEM and SEO consist of, the question always arises: Which one is more effective in achieving your objectives? The answer is not simple, as both have their advantages and disadvantages and what determines the use of one or the other are the objectives you want to achieve and the time and money you are willing to invest in it. While we mentioned at the beginning that either one is sufficient, it is best to combine them and get the best of both SEO and SEM and not miss the opportunity to position your brand or business.
